Tala’s lifelong love for animals grew into a career dedicated to ethical, science-based dog training. With formal accreditation from a nationally recognized school and mentorship from trainers with over fifty years of combined experience, she’s developed a strong background in obedience, scent work, service, and therapy dog training.

Holding certifications including Atlas-CT, CPDT-KA, FDM, FFCP, and AKC Evaluator, Tala continues to grow through ongoing education and collaborations with ADI-accredited service-dog programs.

As Training Director, she oversees Helping Howls programs across Central Virginia and Northern Virginia (NOVA) mentoring trainers, designing individualized training plans, and guiding service-dog development.

As a service-dog handler herself, Tala values accessibility, inclusivity, and positive reinforcement at the heart of every training experience.

When she’s not teaching or mentoring, Tala enjoys volunteering with local clubs, spending time with her own dogs, and continuing her studies to ensure Helping Howls remains a leader in positive-reinforcement based training.

Our Training Team

At Helping Howls, our trainers share a commitment to ethical, positive-reinforcement-based training that builds strong, trusting partnerships between dogs and their people. Our team brings together a range of experience, from service & therapy dog development to puppy foundations, behavior modification, and basic obedience.

Every trainer on our team has been personally mentored in Helping Howls’ reinforcement-based, fear-free approach and continues ongoing education to stay current with modern training methods. Together, we blend compassion, structure, and individualized support to help each dog reach their full potential…whether they’re a beloved family companion or a future service dog.

With locations in Central Virginia and Northern Virginia (NOVA), our trainers work collaboratively to ensure every client receives consistent, high-quality training and long-term support on their journey.

Types of Service Dogs We Train

  • Mobility Assistance Dogs

Mobility dogs help handlers with balance, stability, and everyday tasks such as retrieving dropped items, opening doors, and pressing buttons. They can also provide forward motion support, enhancing independence and confidence for individuals with physical disabilities or chronic pain.

  • Medical Response & Alert* Dogs

These dogs are trained to respond to medical events such as fainting, seizures, or changes in blood sugar by retrieving medication, pressing alert buttons, or staying with their handler until help arrives.
Some dogs may also naturally develop the ability to alert to specific medical changes (such as low blood sugar or impending syncope episodes); however, this is an inherent trait and not one that can be guaranteed or reliably trained in all dogs.

  • Psychiatric Service Dogs (PSD)

Psychiatric service dogs assist individuals living with PTSD, anxiety, OCD, or other mental health conditions. They are trained to perform grounding tasks, provide deep-pressure therapy, interrupt repetitive behaviors, and guide their handler to calm or safe spaces.

  • Autism Support Dogs

Autism support dogs help create safety, structure, and emotional stability for individuals on the autism spectrum. They may assist with transitions, provide tactile comfort, interrupt meltdowns, lead handlers to calm areas, assist in finding known people/locations during meltdowns, or provide proprioceptive assistance.
Autism service dogs may have facilitated handlers for autistic individuals with higher support needs, or the autistic individual may be the primary handler themselves. For children under 16, a facilitated handler must be involved (either as the main handler or as an assistant handler) to ensure safety and consistency.

  • Allergen Detection Service Dogs

Allergen detection dogs are trained to detect specific allergens (such as peanuts, gluten, or other triggers) by scent. They can check environments, foods, and objects before exposure occurs.
Helping Howls assists in allergen detection dog training for individuals with severe or life-threatening allergies, providing safety and peace of mind at home, school, and in public.

  • Multi-Purpose Service Dogs

Some handlers benefit from dogs trained in multiple task groups (such as mobility + psychiatric support, or medical response + mobility). We offer custom service dog programs designed to meet each handler’s unique needs through progressive, positive training.
