Your dog’s training changes as they grow.

Early professional stays may focus on confidence, neutrality, household behavior, functional leash skills, settling, engagement, cooperative care, public access foundations, and early task foundations. Later stays can progress into advanced public access, response tasks, mobility work when appropriate, scent detection when applicable, alerts, task chains, and greater reliability in real world environments.

During home periods, you work with your dog and local trainer on handling skills, basic obedience, everyday manners, maintaining established behaviors, and incorporating your dog into your actual routine.

When your dog returns to Helping Howls, we use what happened at home to help determine what comes next.

There is no single timeline for every Hybrid dog.

A younger puppy will generally need more professional training periods because their earliest stays happen before they are mature enough for advanced service work. An older puppy with strong foundations may need fewer major stays.

Some dogs may also need longer or additional professional training stays due to task complexity, adolescence, public access development, maturity, or areas that need more work.

Progress at home matters too. If recommended training is not maintained, lessons are not attended, or the training plan is not consistently followed, additional professional training may be needed before the dog can continue progressing.

We make these decisions based on the individual dog and team rather than promising a completion date at enrollment.

Hybrid is not intended to be a less expensive version of our Fully Trained Program. It is another path to a fully trained service dog with more handler involvement and a different payment structure.

Your total investment includes the purchase and acquisition of your dog, professional training with Helping Howls, and in person training with your local trainer during home periods.

Many teams should plan for an overall training related investment of approximately $20,000 to $35,000, although the final amount depends on the dog selected, their age, number and length of professional stays, task needs, local trainer rates, and the support your individual team requires.

Eligible Hybrid clients may use our two year in house payment option for Helping Howls program costs.

Normal dog ownership expenses are separate, including food, pet insurance, routine and emergency veterinary care, preventatives, grooming, equipment, supplies, travel, and lodging.

Board & Train is for a dog you already own. Your dog stays with Helping Howls while we work toward specific training goals. Once they return home, there is less ongoing hands-on support built into the service itself. Board & Train rates also increase based on the dog’s age. For older dogs, multiple extended stays can cost considerably more than training through the Hybrid Program.

Hybrid is a complete service dog program. We select your candidate and oversee their development from start to finish. Your dog alternates between extended professional training and structured time at home. This gives you repeated opportunities to develop your handling skills and integrate your dog into your life at a controlled pace. You can learn what works in your home, routine, and day-to-day life with your disability. When your dog returns to us, we can work on any challenges that came up at home before the next transition.

Fully Trained allows Helping Howls to take on the majority of your dog’s raising and professional training. Handlers still visit, spend time with their dogs, participate in training, and begin building their relationship before placement. The biggest difference is how much of the dog’s development happens while living with the handler. Hybrid provides much more time to develop your own training and handling skills throughout the process. Fully Trained provides more professional management of the dog’s development before they transition into your daily life.

All three options provide professional training. The difference is the amount of continued support, handler involvement, and responsibility built into each program.
